Dr. Richard Fernandez, is board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Pain Medicine, and Sports Medicine. A devoted physician with a bent toward Functional Medicine. He initially discovered his profound interest in anatomy and physiology during his formative years engaged in artistic pursuits like drawing, painting, and sculpting. His early artistic endeavors honed his skills in form, detail, and eye-hand coordination — skills he seamlessly translated into his career as a physiatrist. In his practice, Dr. Fernandez frequently utilizes his precise handwork while administering injections such as spinal injections to patients. 
 
His interest in healing was inspired by observing his mother's nurturing use of home remedies and his fascination with his grandmother’s ability to choose herbs from their garden that may aid in treating their ailments. Dr. Fernandez later found his calling in musculoskeletal medicine which he feels is the most natural discipline to follow. With this expertise, he thrives on understanding the flawless design of the body and preserving its integrity through a blend of learned fundamentals and personal treatment techniques. He learned the importance of fitting pieces together harmoniously, much like the complex interplay of orthopedics and theory of neurology in Physiatry.
 
His approach to patient care involves a keen eye for uncovering underlying issues, respect to an individual’s beliefs and to always approach with dignity and honesty. With a focus on personalized care, the goal is to make each patient feel recognized as an individual with a distinct condition that might not always align with standardized solutions and to work together to meet those individual goals realistically. This unique approach, rooted in a blend of functional and traditional medicine, emphasizes a holistic view of achieving overall wellness and functional recovery.
 
He served as an Assistant Professor under the Occupational & Environmental Medicine Department at UCSF from 1997 to 2007. From 2006 to 2020, he worked alongside Richard Derby, M.D. (Anesthesiologist) and Bjorn Eek, M.D. (Orthopedist) at Spinal Diagnostics Medical Group, now known as Comprehensive Spine Medical Group. These leaders of their respective fields have set an incredibly high bar for Dr. Fernandez wherein he commits to ongoing learning and growth, by regularly engaging in board preparation and attending conferences to stay abreast of contemporary medical topics and skill advancements. 
 
Dr. Fernandez provides both traditional treatment options and innovative approaches beyond conventional methods in his clinic, Comprehensive Spine Medical Group.
